Fred Pickett Classic: Lower Merion v. Abington

Scholastic Play By Play

Lower Merion Aces prevail

The Lower Merion Aces punched three player into double figures during their 66-55 victory at the Fred Pickett Classic. Freshman, Sam Brown (’23) tossed in a game high 18 points, James Simples – 12 points, Eli Rothman – 10 points. Nine of Brown’s points came in the, stage setting, 19-10 first quarter. Abington was paced by Robert Bell‘s 15. However, despite a 22 point 4th quarter, the Galloping Ghost could not overcome their dismal performance at the FT line, shooting just 9-20 for the game.

Players for your future lists:

Sam Brown ’23 – Lower Merion

Brown came out the gates electric, brought a real energy to the gym with the long ball. Cooled down, shooting 1-6 the next three quarters from deep. Good looks-they just did not fall. Sam showed poise and understanding late in 4th, in a two possession game… being crowded on the catch… making a skilled move out of the triple-threat, strong into the lane, finishing in traffic. Fundamentally sound and room to grow but the foundations have been laid for future success. #SCENE

Demetrius Lilley ’22 – Lower Merion

The 6-7 Lilley was active around the rim, he scored 4 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. The Sophomore’s sheer size makes tracking the young man’s progression obvious. He will need to work on foot speed and core strength to maximize his full potential. His rubber band has not even begun to stretch. How far it stretches will be determined by his work-ethic and commitment – Stay Tuned, the answer is closer than it appears. #SCENE

Robert Bell, ’21 Abington

Bell was consistent in each quarter running the team from the point guard position. His 15 point effort was work-man like. He defended, applies a lot of pressure on the ball for his team. He has the ability to force turnovers, strong finishing at the rim. Demonstrated ability to knock down the long ball. Worth tracking for small college.

Caleb Baker ’21 – Abington

Baker scored 9 in the second half. most impressive was his determination, leadership and winning mentality when faced with adversity. This kid is a winner regardless the outcome of yesterday’s event. Very solid athlete, defended and allowed the game to come to him. No wasted energy. If I am at a small college, I am inquiring about the 6-2/6-3 kid that did all the little things.

Coming up Monday:

Neumann-Goretti – Westtown

Methacton – Malvern Prep

Reading Makes Opening Statement

Twitter

Denin Adams ’21 was a huge catalyst for the Red Knights who took down Williamsport 70-50. Adams led his team in PTS, REB, 6 FGM, 5 FTM and deflections in three quarters of action. The Millionaires were unable to provide much resistance outside of the first few minutes, when G James Evans McQuay opened with a fury. PREP SCENE had McQuay unofficially going for 13 of his 16 in the first period, before the wheels came off for his club. Reading controlled the second quarter, going on a 12-2 run to start the period and closing out the half up 15, 34-19. Play was sloppy as one could expect with both teams working off the rust. However, the lane was the Red Knights bread and butter. Reading dominated with an abundance of versatile young athletic Forwards. They extended their lead to 56-30 after three, ONLY attempted 2 threes and scored on 22-28 attempts in the lane, for 44 points. Ermil Fleurnvil ’22 scored 13 points and Danial Alcantara ’22 scored 9 for the Red Knights. Alcantara scored Reading’s only field goal (attempted three) outside the paint in the first three quarters. All three young Forwards mentioned show a skyrocketing upside because of their own personal attributes and the adult leaders they have around them.

1:45 PM – ARCHBISHOP WOOD (PA) VS CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN (TX)

Archbishop Wood is led by Coach John Mosco heading into their first game of the 2019-20 schedule on the national scene. They’ve got a number of Division I prospects in their rotation in 2021s guard Rahsool Diggins, guard Jaylen Stinson, wing Daeshon Shepherd, and forward Muneer Newton.  They’ve also got some All-State football players in the rotation in 2022 Andrew Mchugh (First Team) and 2021 Rob Jackson (Second Team). Diggins holds 17 offers from  Florida, VA Tech, Xavier, Penn State, Wake Forest, St Joes, Rutgers, DePaul, Saint Louis, St. Bonaventure, Lasalle +.  Stinson holds over 10 offers from programs at the next level. They’ll be a burden for Cornerstone Christian (TX) in this one.

Cornerstone Christian is led by 2022 four-star shooting guard Tre White who is already committed to Kansas. He’s a highly-skilled 6-foot-5 shooter with nice length that allows him to get to the rim with ease.  In the frontcourt  is five-star Junior big man Jerrell Colbert who is a double-double guy that can block shots at the rim at volume and projects as a future McDonald’s All American. 2020 forward Jordan Wood provides strength and rebounding alongside Colbert . Then they’ve got 2022s Austin Nunes and 6-foot-6 guard Christian Green, two other prospects being pursued by college programs already.

3:30 PM – FIRST LOVE ACADEMY (PA) VS ROCK CREEK CHRISTIAN (MD)

First Love Academy got a big performance from Penn State D.J. Gordon this past weekend at Holiday Hoopsgiving. He scored 19.5 points per game between both games and was an All-Tournament selection. Duquesne commit Jett Roesing is another scorer that can fill it up, especially from behind the arc.  He knocked down five 3-pointers this past weekend at Holiday Hoopsgiving. Isaiah Wilson is another guard in their backcourt headed to Richmond. 2020 forward Damanni Browne was a double-double machine at Holiday Hoopsgiving. Mason Manning is another name to watch for with his ability to knock down 3-pointers and set up teammates for baskets.

DeLonnie Hunt is a lead guard at Rock Creek Christian Academy due for a breakout season. He’s had a bit of change of scenery in his final two seasons but after playing in the WCAC, he’s adjusted well in a new conference. He can play above the rim with his growing athleticism and score in bunches from anywhere on the floor. Hunt and company won last year’s Capital Beltway Athletic Association and return as early favorites in 2019-20. He currently holds offers from Bryant, UMBC, Binghamton and South Alabama. James Gross Jr. is an electric small forward prospect that can play multiple roles on the floor. He’s a smooth operator off the catch-and-shoot 3 and is aggressive attacking the rim off the dribble. Willie Riveria is a star coming up the ranks in the 2022 class ranking in the top 10 shooting guards in DC-Maryland ranks.

Dimingus Stevens has already been a huge addition to Bishop Walsh School after spending time at Wilson High School in Washington D.C.. He’s a 6-foot-5 prospect that can find his rhythm on the 3-point line then blaze past the defense for a dunk above the rim. He does well to get his shot off, especially in the open floor, and is set to make waves at Seton Hall at the college level. 2020 forward Wilson Ramabu has emerged as a rebounding machine and shot-blocker in the early going. He’s a prospect to watch in the frontcourt.  (-excerpt from Big Shots Preview I)

The Great Atlantic Conference: Session I

Peak Skills Academy – East Berlin, New Jersey was the center of the ultra-competitive world of big-time high school/prep basketball yesterday afternoon. The occasion was the first of four featured triple-headers this season by the Great Atlantic Conference (GAC). The event stockpiles the talent of the league members, Mt. Zion Academy (MD), Olympus Academy (NJ), Patrick School (NJ), Perkiomen School (PA) Scotland Campus (PA), and West Nottingham Academy (MD) under one roof for college basketball coaches to evaluate in hopes of finding their next all conference player. Unlike your typical high school setting, there is a focus and business-like atmosphere that comes with big-time prep basketball… and the Great Atlantic Conference maximized this focus and has shown it is all business when it comes to securing exposure for their student-athletes. If you could not make it to Jersey yesterday, we have a breakdown of the action for you. However, lock these dates and locations in your calendar for the next three GAC triple-headers: December 11 @Mt. Zion, January 15 @Scotland Campus, January 25 @Perkiomen School

In the opener, The Patrick School (NJ) defeated Mt. Zion Academy (MD) 64-62. This was the closest game of the day and very evenly matched. The size of Mt. Zion was not enough to edge out the strong guard play of The Patrick school in the closing minutes. Mt. Zion was led by 6-8 Syracuse -bound Woody Newton with 13 points and the sensational night on the glass by unsigned 2020 David N’Guessen, who had a double-double pulling down 15 boards. Other players to watch were 6-10 Center Jo Smith and an explosive wing in Otis Frazier. For the victors, wings Terrence Jones (6-3), scored in side out and Matteo Strikker (6-5, 2021) with the long ball, combined for 27 points and 12 rebounds. While Bendji Pierre (2020) and Babacar Diallo (2021) battled inside all night scoring in double figures. Pierre was a work-horse inside using his width to gain position and keep the rebounding margin respectable.

Trese Berry

Scotland put on a dominant performance from start to finish in game two. If anyone wanted to argue, they are the best team in the State of Pennsylvania people would have to listen… and listen hard. They have put together a nice early season resume. West Nottingham led by Sophomore Yan Ferell’s 20 point effort is their latest victim. Scotland just had too many weapons for a West Nottingham group looking to restore the program to their early 2000’s heyday. Scotland’s ability to create turnovers and nail the long ball were the difference in this one early. Jayson Woodrich (12 points) knocked down his first 3 triples to push the lead out to 27-9 minutes in. Norance “Trese” Berry got the job done on the defensive end, leading the team with 3 steals and 6 of his 11 points in the lopsided 55-32 first half. Scotland had a very balanced scoring attack and played 15+ players in the 102-65 victory. 6-10 Obou Ousmane tossed in 6 of his 13 points and 6 rebounds in the first half for the Knights. He also demonstrated a real soft touch on his mid-range shot 15 feet and in, in the early stages of the game. Scotland was led in scoring by 6-3 Dee Marriweather who knocked down 4 threes in the second half. Other players to note for West Nottingham were 6-4 Caudy Desmornes 10 points (high academic kid, 1300+ SAT). He also had 18 the week before when I seen them verse Covenant Prep. 2021 Glen Osemeha shot the ball well from deep again, efficient and 6-6 Tomiwa Sulaiman competed on the glass just short of a double-double.

The host of the event, Olympus Prep trailed by seven points at halftime and eventually lost 70-59 to the SUPER 25’s #11 ranked, Perkiomen School. York, PA’s Clovis Gallon, Jr. was one of three Olympus players in double figures. He knocked down 2 three’s on his way to 11 points.

6-4 Tyree Barbara-Bey was instrumental in keeping his team withing striking distance. The former NJ Panther (1st SCENE) Barbara-Bey did a little of everything out there, ending with 16 points and teammate Jahmir Tyrell closed out with his own 15, many of them at the rim.

In true winners fashion and without a shadow of a doubt, Perkiomen’s 2021 Honor Huff continues to impress this season. The former Allentown Dieruff standout has been lights out each time we have seen him. The little guard came up big again yesterday with 5 triples, 4 in the first half on over .500 percent shooting from deep and 3 steals on his way to a 23 point outing. Teammate 6-6 Josh Odunowo added a double-double. Other Perk players to note include Steve Payne. The 6-1 guard does multiple things well to help his team win, adding 8 rebounds and several assists to his 13 point effort… and last but not least 6-4 Gil Otto scored his 13 from all three levels and continues to clamp down at the defensive end.

Milton Hershey Scrimmage Notes:

Parra shows he is a money kid.

Josh Parra 6-5 Milton Hershey 2020

Josh Parra continues to box his game up and excel at his strengths. In an age of take you off the bounce… everyone is a guard… it is refreshing to see a kid do sooooo much by doing absolutely nothing extra. Parra already holds Division I gridiron scholarships and with the 6-5 Forward’s play on the hardwood, basketball will be an option for him as well.

He is capable of impacting a game at the next level from either end of the floor with a workman-like mentality. He is explosive off the floor with a nose for the ball. High IQ kid understands positioning and angles. The “Play of the Day” was him simply sliding down the lane on a baseline drive by a teammate and elevating until his elbows were at the rim… off of one step… for an impressive banger. It was fun watching he and his teammates dominate the glass.

His size may keep him from landing the always coveted Division I scholarship in hoops but make no mistakes about it the kid could produce in one of the best Division II conferences in the country right here in our own backyard if given the opportunity. The PSAC is a grown mans’ league and Parra could go get me a rebound and put-back right now if I needed it mark my words… and just so we are clear, I could not say that for anyone else in the mid-state.

Parra scores on a layup in closing seconds to defeat Archbishop Carroll and nationally ranked AJ Hoggard in 2018.
