2020 Tanner Mathos, Lincoln Park Academy (Pittsburgh)
Drill for Skill
6-5 Forward
Tanner Mathos at just 14 years old, helped Midland’s Lincoln Park Academy reach the Pennsylvania AAA State Final. Mathos is a 6-5 rising sophomore with a nice upside based on his frame and skill set. He is an ultra competitive player that has a toughness about him that translates well to the next level. 2017 Bowling Green recruit Nelly Cummings refers to Mathos as a “sleeping giant…by the time he is a senior everyone is going to know about Tanner.” Here at Prep Scene we agree… During his freshman campaign, Mathos was used as a role player and inside presence. With his age group he does have the ability to play with the ball in his hands on the wing and consistantly makes shots. After a very productive 2017 JV season, he did not begin to receive meaningful varsity minutes until the 2nd round of the state playoffs. He quickly established himself as a contributor. In the state final he was obviously out classed, but stood toe to toe with Neuman-Goretti big guns, 2017 Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree (6-10 Villanova signee) and 2018 Marcus Little (6-8 numerous BCS offers). He possesses good feet and great timing. He is able to contest shots around the rim and get out on the break. Offensively we will need more opportunities to see him play to provide in-depth analysis. Prep Scene looks forward to further evaluating Mathos this spring and summer. It should be noted we recognize his potential even in a very limited viewing segment.
