PREP SCNENE

Four teams carry PA’s proud basketball tradition on their sneaker sponsored shoulders tonight.

ITPS – Takes on Ohio Basketball Club, OBC is one of the flagship Adidas programs year in and year out.  This is an interesting match-up for the states newest addition to the sneaker circuit.  For one, OBC has made strong in-roads into Western PA to pull players in the past.  A Wildcats win could go a long way in letting their Three Stripe brothers know they are all grown up.

K-Low Elite – Squares off with Team New England in the Nations Capital.  After a strong scrimmage last week, K-Low is ready to represent for PA in the Adidas Gauntlet Series as well.

Philly Pride – Dallas, Texas is the site of Pride’s early tussle with West Coast royalty.  Tonight’s game with West Coast Elite in the Under Armour Association for one of Eastern PA’s most consistant programs is expected to be highly contested.

Team Final – Looks to build on their late Peach JamFest playoff birth last July and compete for the 2018 Nike Title. 1st game of the EYBL season Pits TF against Arkansas’ Woodz Elite.

#BeSCENE

Gas up the automobiles and 747’s – grassroots basketball has just finished its cup of morning coffee and is wide awake… the warm-ups and scrimmages are over.  Things are about to get real.  Student-athletes across the state have been practicing since their high school seasons ended in anticipation of the NCAA April Live Period.  From the kid on the mom & pop team with the hopes of he & his friends winning a couple of games and being seen on the main courts; to the kid affiliated with the highly successful organization, that’s known for developing their kids and placing them in schools; to the ultra-talented fully funded sneaker kid, traveling with his team full of Division I talent and potential pros, waiting in the airport hoping his love of basketball translates beyond a college scholarship and oneday onto a private Jet.  One thing is for certain, whether they are headed to Pittsburgh, Ohio, New Jersey, Kentucky, Indiana, Texas, or DC, they all have one thing in common.  Even tho’ there are Levels to this thing called travel ball….  As of tonight —ALL – still have hopes of performing well on the big state in front of college coaches.  By Friday night the best players in the state of Pennsylvania along with many others with a dream will be on the hardwood ripping it up vying for that coveted scholarship.  Best of Luck to all.

1.    Scotland Campus Sports

D361B8F6-509C-4FC5-B363-D8086FEEFBD1

With 7-foot-1, 240-pound Bradley-commit Ari Boya, 6-foot-11 UNLV-commit Louis Bangai, and a versatile 6-foot-9 high-major prospect Karim Coulibaly (2019), head coach Chris Chaney has utilized the blend of size, athleticism, and skills to place Scotland Campus Sports in the National conversation, the prep school upper echelon.  SCS has leaned heavily on their front-court to remain unbeaten playing older, stronger opponents than your traditional PIAA foes.  The backcourt is manned by a slew of college prospects in 6-foot-1 point guard Justice Kendall (2018) and wings Sam Chaput, Tyrone Nesby (Reading High), and Chris Whitaker (Harrisburg High) among others.  Scotland holds steady for the third week at number 1, defeating Harcum Junior Colleges’ JV, Olympus Academy and Rocktop Academy Games: Scotland semester has ended and kids return home for the holidays, their next game is 1/11, @Silver Oak Academy (MD).

2.   Kennedy Catholic (Hermitage)

50F0A644-2690-4152-9A28-7C82174DE61C

Kennedy Catholic has been on a terror since play began, opening up the season in mid-season form.  KC has been taking down formidable opponents in convincing fashion.  Once again receiving a share of first place votes in week 4, but not enough to dethrone SCS.  Coach Mancino’s team can score it from all five positions.  2019 Maceo Austin is the engine, his 29 point, 7 rebound, 5 assist performance in an 87-60 win over PREP SCENE HM Sewickley Academy in front of Kentucky skipper John Calipari was impressive.  Not to mention teammate Oscar Tshiebwe (2019) provided 29 and 16 himself with 3 blocked shots.  Upcoming Games: 12/20 @West Middlesex, 12/22 @Woodrow Wilson (WV).

3.   Imhotep Charter (Philadelphia)

04D62543-320C-4F72-80C8-6236E615CACA

Imhotep Charter applies relentless full court pressure on opponents.  The pressure starts and ends on the ball with 6-0 Bernard Lightsey (2018) and 5-9 Fatayn Wesley.  Tep has the length and defensive fortitude to impose its will on opponents and turn defense into offense.  Coach Noble has a host of players up in passing lanes and rigorously contesting every shot-attempt including 6-4 Dahmir Bishop (2019) , 6-6 Jamil Riggins (2019) and 6-6 Chereef Knox (2019) and 6-8 Elijah Taylor (2020).  Great teams can beat you in a variety of ways, Tep is no exception.  The offense is guided by (2019) 6-7 Point-forward Donta Scott.   This week provided wins over Frankford 65-28, PREP SCENE HM Martin Luther King 57-40, and USA TODAY EAST #9 Roselle Catholic (NJ) 56-53.  Upcoming Games: 12/19 Audenried, 12/20 PREP SCENE #13 Roman Catholic, 12/22 Gill St. Bernard (NJ).

E06D5E16-9FE0-4D89-BC54-B3948A91170A

Westtown is a much different team when both Duke and Indiana bound Cameron Reddish & Jake Forrester are on the floor.  Seth Berger does not have the bench to sustain the loss of either over the course of a national schedule.  Reddish is the do it all 6-9 point guard that single-handedly dominates any game on the schedule.  Forrester dominates out in transition, filling lanes on the break, slashing and contests shot after shot on the defensive end.  This week included bookend wins over George 63-44  PREP SCENE 2020 Noah Collier had 13 points and 4 rebounds and a 3rd place win over host Bullis (MD), Reddish tossed in 33.  The lone loss of the week came at the hands of Episcopal (VA) at Bullis Tourney, 82-62 – Indiana commit Jake Forrester was inactive, out with a sprained ankle but has since returned. Games: 12/21 Prolific Prep in South Carolina.

62AE5AD8-3FB9-49DB-A269-6CB343A83036

7-1 Naheem Mcloud (2019) continues to anchor the colonials at both ends of the floor.  Defensively, he allows them to apply significant pressure on the ball and allows them to push up even further in the passing lanes without the fear of giving up easy baskets his mere presence alters everything.  Much of the impact he has on a game doesn’t show up in the box score.  Although he manages to fill that up as well.  In wins over Bishop Shanahan 68-51, he had 19 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks followed with a 14 point 17 rebound 4 block night in a 66-53 win over PREP SCENE HM Archbishop Carroll.  Danny Cooper had 16 points, Ahmin Williams (2018) with 10 points and Ish Horn also with 10.   Rounding out the scoring in the Shanahan game was Ahmin Williams -17 points  and Alan Glover – 16 points and 10 rebounds. OVERTIME with COLETRANE WASHINGTON

P R E P   S C E N E  had an opportunity to sit down with Quaker Valley senior and recent Drexel University commit Coletrane Washington.  At 6-5, 170 lbs – Coletrane is a homebody who enjoys spending time with his family.  Throughout the interview family and home was a common theme.  He has an affection and gratitude toward his family, that was obvious from the moment we began our discussion.  Off the court he enjoys spending time with his brother and sisters.  He attends all of their games.  He even indicated that he gets more nervous on their game-days than his own.  This season is big for Coletrane, not because it is his senior year but because as he says “My oldest sister, Corinne (15) is a freshman, so I am looking forward to catching as many of her games as I can before I leave for school, along with keeping up with the twins activities Zack, Zora, (10).  When Coletrane is not at home or with his siblings, there is only one other place you will find him, and that is in the gym working on his craft.

Much like our other OVERTIME interviews, Coletrane is laying out his blueprint for younger student-athletes looking to obtain an athletic scholarship.  He was excited about the opportunity to speak to kids across the country through this blog.  He understands there are no secrets or gimmicks to success in basketball or Life.  He hasn’t reinvented the wheel, Coletrane has modeled his own life after others who have accomplished aquiring scholarships and athletic-stardom before him.  He has found inspiration in, and emulated the work-ethic and best practices of greats like Lebron James.  Don’t think that the kid known for that “wettest jump shot” in Pittsburgh, put “jumper” on his Christmas list and that sweet stroke just appeared under his tree.   You will not meet a more disciplined, hard working and dedicated student-athlete.  Repetition and hours with his father, Jesse Washington helped to perfect his shooting form…But trust me he is more than just a pure-shooter.  How did he transform his game from a “shooter” to an all-around triple double threat, able to score from all three levels.  Keep reading and you will see why!

Congratulations on signing with The Dragons, what led you to pick Drexel University.

I Grew up 20 minutes from Drexel in the Drexel Hill area of the city.  I love Philadlephia, Pittsburgh is where I live, its a great place but Philly is home…I just loved the area.  I still have family and friends in there… Also, the coaching staff is amazing from Coach Spiker on down – They were very honest and open with me from the beginning of the recruiting process.  Definitely took the time to get to know me as a person.  I love their style of play… It’s the way I have always played …Uptempo fast paced, running…you have to be in shape… A lot of emphasis on defense…. Quality shots early in the shot clock… getting up and down. I love it!

If you could only pick one, what is the single most influential factor that positioned you to receive a Division I scholarship.

“The first thing is my books, books always came first with my parents, I am thankful for that because I was able to sign with such a great academic university in Drexel.  Just to be eligible for a scholarship, you have to have good grades.  A lot of kids get too caught up on the basketball side of things and forget about the academics but definitely the academics has to come first.”

When was it that you fell in love with this game?

E34BD093-8A39-4D81-8F82-8E8448FDAEAC

“As long as I can remember it was my dream to become a college basketball player and see how far I could take basketball in life.  My Dad, was the first person I ever started working out with.  He supported my dream from day one.  He told me “if I wanted to do this, I have to work hard, I had to use everyday to get better as a player and person.”  He was the first person, I ever started working with and I still work with him to this day…We are always working out together. ”

How did you manage to maintain academic and athletic success at the same time?

“I put my books before ball always, learned good time management skills early… If I have a study hall, I use that time to actually focus on my work.  As Student-Athletes looking to excel in college, we shouldn’t be on our phones during study hall… Being a student-athlete just in high school is difficult, juggling everything… but we need to develop a strong foundation now because college will be more intense with added practice, travel demands and games.  Everything just bumps up to a new level, so you have to form and develop those good habits before you get to college, start practicing good study habits, getting yourself into routines… balancing your time… plan out your days now, so you are ready for the grueling lifestyle of a Division I basketball player.  Study, eat, practice, study film… you just have to plan out your day.”

Great advice,

Yes, I was taught at an early age, to put technology to the side and not allow it to distract me from my goals.  Take care of business before you engage in any form of social media.  Sometimes you have to flip the phone on silent, put it on “Do Not Disturb” and get this work done for an hour, hour and half.  And then when your done…Check it, talk to your friends…your’e always going to have time to do that…There is enough downtime…but you have to learn…If you really want to pursue a college scholarship, you are going to have to sacrifice some of your me time. You cant talk about this, that and the third…You have to be in the gym or doing your homework when your peers are on Snap, if you want to separate yourself.

What have you done Athletically to position yourself to be at able to attend Drexel on an athletic scholarship?

“Hmmm… staying patient through the process, trusting the process really.”

What is this process we hear so much about nowadays?

Quaker Valley's Coletrane Washington

Working hard no matter what.  The process just describes the hard work.   It’s the slow cooker vs the microwave.  Trusting the process is trusting the time and effort your spending is worth it.  I didn’t really get recruited that much until later, like last summer is when I really started to peak some Division I interest. I would say don’t get discouraged if you’re not getting the looks you want, just keep working, keeping grinding, that hard work is always gonna’ pay off.  Keep working, never get discouraged… Hard work is always going to show..  you don’t have to tell people you’re doing this or you’re doing that.  A lot of people will put in that fake work, just enough to get a picture for the Gram or a 10 second Snap… The process doesn’t lie, your game will always reflect the work you invest.  Don’t focus on exposure, if your’e under the radar and not noticed…Focus on what you can control… Focus on the process not the outcome, put in the hard work, keep working hard an trust the process will produce outcomes even when the outcomes you want aren’t in sight yet.  When its all said and done, your game will always speak for itself!!! “

That’s pretty powerful advice. What kept you focused on the process of self improvement, when time was running out… you’re entering your senior year with limited Division I interest and no offers?

My Bridge City, AAU coaches definitely helped me through this process a lot Nate Perry and Tom Droney.  They definitely motivated me, especially through those times when I wasn’t getting the looks and I was just plowing away, working hard.  Getting better everyday.  Improving my first step, finishes at the rim, defense.  They would encourage me to keep working hard, keep at it and it will come and eventually it did, so again you just have to trust the work you are putting in.  I consider myself a little slept on as a player…

Tell me how you were feeling as the months passed, others around you were committing to schools, did you ever begin to doubt the process?

“Probably two years ago, I wasn’t really getting recruited much…Couple Division II’s but no I’s… Junior year I had some Division I interest but no offers.  Colleges were waiting to see how I played on the circuit.  We even thought about a year of prep school but it became internal motivation for me, allowed me to play with a huge chip on my shoulder this summer…When it didn’t look like it was going to happen.  My family and coaches kept me grounded “in controlling getting better”.  My confidence never wavered.  Even if it took me an extra year, the belief in myself and the chip on your shoulder was going to get me a Division I scholarship.  I knew the work I was putting in and I knew the caliber of individuals that were investing their time in my development.  You have to use, not getting the looks you want as an advantage.  Between Nate, Tom, & Derek Clark, my school trainer… we just kept weight training, improving my flexibility, agility, stretching regiments…They just kept working with me the past two years on expanding my skills.  Their belief in me just gave me a bigger chip on my shoulder that propelled me to get where I am.  I went at everyone that was getting D-I attention to prove I was better.  Went Harder, Worked Harder! “

Okay, you just decided to attend Drexel…Tell me how you were feeling at that moment?

Cole_Drex

Happy,  excited, like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders… knowing that I had worked extremely hard to get to this point… That I had accomplished one of my main goals in life up until this point… But it quickly turned to, I have to work even harder now.  I have to work 10x harder… I know being successful at the next level will take even more hard work than it took to get there.  With each jump in levels requires blood, sweat, and tears.  So now I am just working on getting my weight up to 180-185, getting stronger, lifting…eating like an elite athlete.  This will get my body ready  for college when I step on campus… Working on getting my handle tighter.  I’m only 6-5… So I was recruited as a possible combo, I’ll mostly be at the two but if I am asked to run the one I have to be ready to facilitate the offense.

What are some Goals you have for the upcoming season?

Team Goals, definitely to win the WPIAL Championship, we lost in title game last season so winning the WPIAL, we have a lot of pieces back so make another deep state run, we lost in the Final Four.  So we want to go even farther this season.  Then individually, I want to help my team by averaging a double-double, be more imposing rebounding the ball and record a few triple doubles this season.

Best of luck to you this season and PREP SCENE looks forward to following your career at Quaker Valley, and then at Drexel.

Thank you

OVERTIME with SEAN GOOD

When P R E P  S C E N E  initially spoke with recent Lafayette College signee and Trinity High School (Camp Hill, PA) senior Sean Good about writing a piece for underclassman, or coaches, and parents to share with younger student athletes, he lit up like a Christmas tree.   The six foot-eleven inch, walking double double, who averaged just under 5 blocks a game as a junior could not hold back his enthusiasm.  You could hear it in his voice, the towering star with offers from schools in the Big 10 and ACC wanted to dive right in.  He was extremely complementary about the goal of our OVERTIME series; to help athletes grow on and off the court.  He has done numerous interviews and has talked all about his decision to attend Lafayette over the last few weeks, but for him, you could tell, this was different.  It was a chance to give back, to pay it forward.  Success is never an accident, and immediately after speaking with Sean, I was  reminded of a book by Jon Huntsman, Sr., a multi-billionaire who started a chemical company from scratch and grew it into a $12 billion dollar enterprise.  In his book “Winners Never Cheat” he states that  “There are no moral shortcuts in the game of business (I’ll insert basketball here) or life,” … “There are, basically, three kinds of people, the unsuccessful, the temporarily successful, and those who become and remain successful. The difference is character.”  .

Young kids looking to play this game at a very high level pay close attention to Sean’s insight about honesty and integrity.  The value he places on having quality people in his life, the value he places on the constructive criticism and advice he received along the way.  This interview provides remarkably mature insight into “The Process” of becoming a college scholarship worthy basketball player.  Insight into character, the often overlooked variable in the high stakes world of win at all cost basketball.  The theme throughout our interview and what kept resonating the most in one form or fashion – was Character.  For Sean and his inner circle, honesty & integrity is a constant state of mind and is not situational.   He is thankful for the benefits he has received by being surrounded with high character individuals along his journey.  Individuals that have been truthfully honest with him throughout every step of the process, even when it was uncomfortable or unfavorable.  Individuals that not only invest in his athletic skills but in his character and integrity as he follows in their footsteps.

First off, Congratulations on signing on the dotted line with Coach O’Hanlon and the Lafayette Leopards.  That is big time, $200,000 dollars worth of education with one of the nations highest ranked Liberal Arts colleges.  Good stuff!

“Thank you I appreciate it.  It is an amazing opportunity”

What was it that made you say, Lafayette is where I will spend the next four years of my life and grow as a man?

“I had it down to a couple of schools,…Lafayette, Colgate, Rice, and Columbia…It was weird this year, a lot of people committed early so things were a little hectic.   (Alluding to the recruiting dominoe effect, of players accepting scholarship offers.  This can change the recruiting landscape of several schools recruiting Lafayette campusthe same players/postions.  One commitment can make a player an instant  priority, it can also put added pressure on others with offers to make  decisions, “guaranteeing” themselves a roster spot.  What can unfold is a domino effect in which one highly recruited player makes a selection and others down the line follow suit for a variety of reasons.)  I took an official to Lafayette and just loved it there.  My shadow… freshman, Justin Jaworski was just amazing, I loved the campus.”

I have seen you mention in other articles about the importance of family to you, did this play into the decision at all to remain in state?

“Yes, Lafayette is in the perfect spot for me, where it is far enough away from home but not unreachable.  Games will be easily accessible for family and friends.  I have said it over and over but must say it again.  I love Coach O’Hanlon, he reminded me so much of Coach Kos (Larry Kostelac, Trinity Head Coach).  Same kind of Stand Up Guys.  Their word is their bond… The are both genuine, honest and hard working.  If you need something done, they are selfless and will be on it in an instant… they get things done the right way.  They are just those kind of honorable guys.

What did you like most about the visit?

“Throughout my visit the guys on the team were great, I had a lot of genuine conversations, actually one or more with each team member.  The conversations were spontaneous, open and honest… It was great!  You could tell it was natural and the guys wanted to get to know me and ultimately play with me in the future.  I had the opportunity to shadow a couple classes…absolutely loved the academic environment.  It is a lot like Trinity, they are not a huge school…class sizes are pretty small… very well respected, great student to faculty ratio and an amazing Engineering program… and that is what I will be majoring in, Chemical Engineering…..All around the perfect fit!  Each school in my final list offered so much… For me Lafayette was just the right combination at the right moment.”

Okay the decision is made, your mind is made up.  walk me through the process…

“I called Coach O’Hanlon and told him I am committing to attend Lafayette College… The call was very celebratory.  Happy upbeat!  Dreams do come true, all that good stuff…I got my school, they got their guy… it’s great everyone is all happy… and then the phone hangs up.   Immediately you realize you have to call Coach Langel at Colgate, Coach Pera at Rice, Coach Engels at Columbia… For a young individual it is a tough thing to do but also something you learn from,,,, you have to tell someone, you’re sorry… you loved so much about their school, staff and players… you appreciated all the time we shared as you recruited me, thank you for having me up for my visit but I have decided that Lafayette College is the best choice for my future.  I mean it was tough, very tough, extremely tough …. I became friends with all of those coaches and it was really really tough but it is definitely a learning experience…learning to deliver unfavorable news in a professional manner, that’s the one good thing I kinda drew from that.  It is definitely that kind of moment when your calling them, the phone is ringing, and your planning in your head what you are going to say… They aren’t expecting it… All three coaches were great… They weren’t thrilled by any means but they all  expressed the idea mutually that I had great opportunities in front of me no matter who I choose…

Good - PREP SCENE: OVERTIME

They mentioned each other in a way… They were understanding.  You have got to do it, you have to make those calls.  The day of… you have to suck it up… Communicate honestly… you can’t leave people hanging …Let people know, be honest.  Being honest will carry you through so many aspects of your life.  just communication, just quick honest communication… very simple straight forward…It will be awkward but as long as you tell them with honesty they will respect you for it!”

At what age did you begin to get serious about the game of Basketball?

“My gravitivity towards basketball started kind of in a big way with Steve Little out of Steelton, PA.  He was huge in pushing this snow ball down the hill for me.  When I was in the 5th grade going into the 6th grade, I was really tall, lanky and uncoordinated.  I was a work in progress, but I loved basketball.  I loved it, really starting to get into it.  Coach Little put me on his BrakBred team, we were 12U at the time….a bunch of us guys like Shaquon Anderson-Butts (Harrisburg WR – Penn State Football commit) ,  Brian Garner (Susquehanna, WR), Shakeel Sheppard (Susquehanna, RB) Yahmir Wilkerson (Harrisburg, QB) just a bunch of really good athletes.  It was so much fun, we were really good … I really liked Coach Little and we practiced all the time.  He really got me into the game of basketball, his practices were really tough.  He instilled that work ethic into me.  Made me really think about working on my game after I left practice, when he wasn’t around, you know off days that whole summer, just play at the park… instilled the want to be better in me when I was 11-12 years old.  He planted the seed, and we have been watering it ever since.  I still keep in touch with him, to this day…I always talk to him.  I owe a lot to him I really do.”

Growing up, is there anyone you patterned your game after?  Someone that you pretended to be during those hot summer days in the park?

“Looking back when I was younger who I really liked was… It’s funny, I never really watched a lot of basketball when I was young.  I can say one of the first people that I started to realistically pattern my game after, like around seventh grade, was Stephan Adams.  I watched Stephen Adams in college, when he was at Pitt, I liked his game.  I seen a lot of what I could be in him.  I still like watching him today.  I wasn’t the kid that was always watching basketball when I was young… That was one thing Coach Steve Little did that was huge for me…He was very honest…he presented me with, here are your pluses and minuses and here is what you need to work on to get to the next level.  He had me think into the future -plan ahead a little…visualize where I was going.  I knew at an early age who I was and tried to box my game up and do what I personally was good at and work on my own at what I was not.

Steve Little coached you for several years, even into high school prior to you joining forces with Nike sponsored Team Final out of the Philadelphia area.   Tell me about your decision and what led you to go with Team Final.

“It was a tough decision, because I really loved Coach Little and I knew that he always was looking out for my best interest.  He had always been a stand up guy, told me exactly what I needed to work on… you want to play major college basketball here is what you need to develop.  His honesty made it easier but I was still  worried about it…How would I tell him.  I…. at the time I really wanted to play for him, but I also wanted to play for Team Final.  We had a great deal of open and honest conversations that winter leading up to the Spring and Summer AAU season…  We talked about it and actually he was one of the people who really propelled me to do it.  From what I remember he was like Go for it, I mean Team Final, the whole EYBL scene, I mean that’s a big time stage.  He was like go for it, you will be missed…not being able to coach you, you will be missed but he knew it was a good opportunity for me.  I was fortunate to have him as a selfless mentor looking out for my best interest.  Our discussions really helped me down the road.”  Uncomfortable, open and honest conversations, I grew up when I had to tell Coach Little my plans…Funny, looking back, I think he even mentioned I would be having these difficult conversations again when it was time to choose a college…at the time I didn’t think anything of it.  He was right”

Playing in the EYBL, arguably the premier summer basketball circuit in the country what would you say you learned the most from that experience?

“I loved my time with Team Final.  It was a huge time commitment, most of my teammates were from, in or around the Philadelphia area…I had to drive an hour forty minutes to practice every weekend.  So I learned time management.  The travel is extensive, I’ve seen a lot of the country, so how to travel and perform at a high level…I loved the traveling aspect of it and you room with the guys… I roomed with a bunch of different guys throughout my years with Final… I really grew close with a good amount of them.  Just to name a few…Like Sam Sessoms, initially the first year I played for Final… him and I clashed, we were like total opposites but as the years passed… this summer me and him we are really good friends its funny how that worked out.  So I learned a lot about myself.”

Who helped you navigate the recruiting process?

“Coach Kostelac was instrumental.  Now a days people don’t view your high school experience as important as the summer AAU season.  I’ve even heard people express that high school doesn’t really matter.  But I will tell you it may be shifting in that direction in but it’s still pretty much a lot of high school involvement.  College coaches get a lot of information from your high school coach.  Especially with a guy as prestigious as Coach Kos, he is so well respected, for his honesty, again his word is his bond.  He is high character.  He is a proven evaluator of talent, if he says you’re a good player-anybody who is anybody will believe what he is saying.  Coach Kos and Rob Brown (Director of Team Final) actually… its funny…They got to be good friends too along the way.  They were working mutually on my behalf.  Coach Kos would send out a lot of film from my high school games, make contacts. Rob Brown would put him in contact with the coaches that were contacting him and vise versa.  They grew close.  They both would relay it back to me and the two of them together were actually an extremely beneficial resource for my family…all around…. I would ask Rob Brown if he had contacts at a certain school that I had an interest in and he was just that guy … I would be on the phone with them.”

At what age did you become familiar or concern yourself with the NCAA requirements, terms such as NCAA Core Credits, Core GPA, & SAT scores ect?

“Its funny… I always wanted to do good in school.  I have always been a good student.  Coach Kos, when I first came to Trinity he foresaw that I would be going somewhere in four years on an athletic scholarship of some sort and he made it a point to put me in contact with the student adviser/counselor at Trinity.  Before I walked in the door he had someone that I was working with, planning ahead to meet the NCAA Core Requirements.  It was my 8th grade summer and we planned out my 4 years of high school tentatively… what I would be taking. You can not stress the importance of that enough.  It does not take a huge amount of work, but just a little knowledge, diligence and applying yourself… that’s all you need to do… apply yourself and think and plan ahead!!”

Let me know what to expect from the Shamrocks in 2018?

I am excited to enjoy the last year with the team, especially the seniors… 5-6 of us, we came up through the program together.  We want to leave our mark on the proud tradition of Trinity Basketball… we have to make it count… Have fun enjoy it and make the most of the season, go as far as we can… League, Districts, States our goals remain the same but you have got to enjoy playing.  There will be tough times this season, there are every season but this game is fun… One thing you can count on, we will enjoy it and make it count.

Anything you would like to add to the underclassman reading?

“Absolutely, have fun with the game of basketball, don’t take it so serious that you burn out.  Remember to have fun, that still means work hard but make it fun and memorable.  Do your research early and often, on the schools that show you interest.  Academic curriculm, stlye of play, coaches, players… do your homework…Evaluate yourself honestly.  What are your strengths and weaknesses, have people in your corner that will tell you the truth!   Work hard that will take you far, farther than most people will get.  Outwork your competition.”
