2020 – Darrius Davis,

Propel Andrew Street (Pittsburgh)

Bridge City

6-3, Guard/Forward

Davis is one of the most explosive athletes in Pennsylvania’s talented 2020 class.  He is a smooth and effortless athlete able to rise up and finish over larger defenders or chase down smaller guards sending the ball careening off the backboard.   Davis who is still very raw, is an absolute nightmare in transition.  Here lies his biggest value; where he flourishes the most is in an uptempo game; pressing, trapping, filling lanes and getting out on the break. Blessed with a long wing-span, high motor and attacking skills of a starved predator, Davis is a must see for college coaches looking for a slashing finisher.  Crucial for Davis to reach his full potential will be the progression of his jump shot and half-court awareness.  All indications are he is a tireless worker, which gives hope that “Raw-Talent” will not be used to describe Davis for very long.

Player Eval: A.J. Hoggard

2020  A.J. Hoggard, Archbishop Carroll (Philadelphia)

Team Final

6-3 Guard

No surprise here Hoggard has been on the national radar since grade school.  He possess the size and strength to translate immediately to the collegiate game.  At 6-3 Hoggard is drawn to the rim with a magnetic force, leaving high school defenders behind him with his first step and ability to finish through contact against much bigger defenders.  For much of 2017, Hoggard has been a steady leader on Carroll, an annual state contender.   During his freshman campaign, he could be overly aggressive and out of control  at times offensively.  However, this should not be cause for alarm.  Hoggard is in a great program with an exceptional coaching staff led by Paul Romanczuk, therefore his progression and basketball maturation is inevitable.    He is an ultra competitive scoring point with the uncanny ability to get and keep everyone in the mix.  Hoggard is a kid who feeds off of the success of his teammates.  Defensively he is best filling passing lanes and turning opponents mishaps into immediate scoring opportunities for his team.  He is a risk taker defensively and often puts himself and teammates in challenging situations.  With that said, Hoggard has guarded some of the best upperclassman in District 12 1 on 1 and has more than held his own on the ball.

Player Eval: Nate Wilson

2020 – Nate Wilson, Northeastern          (Manchester, PA)

Central PA Elite

6-2, Guard

Wilson is hands down one of the must see 2020 kids in Pennsylvania.   Why?  The kid is a starter and producer; filling the roll of a steady facilitator and pure shooter on a very good 27-2 state playoff team for one.  But that is just half of the story… Wilson can do it all at 15.  Although, he is not asked to put his high school team on his back there will be time for that later… you can still tell his upside is tremendous.  Yes he is a lights out shooter, but above all he is a BASKETBALL PLAYER!!  Mr. Utility knife.  Wilson is the son of Matt Wilson, former Ohio State vollleyball player and 4-time state champion.  He possesses the ball handling skills and IQ to run your team from the point guard position and is also a very effective slasher.  However, he is best off the ball, coming off screens or waiting on kick outs to tickle the twine with deadly accuracy.   Rain drop!!!  Before he suits up for Bob Thomas and CPE this AAU season catch him with his “District Champion” Bobcats Friday night at West York High School vs Wissahickon.

Player Eval: Xavier Samuels

2020 – Xavier Samuels,

Central Dauphin East (Harrisburg)

6-3, Forward

Samuels is a pure athlete that projects as a wing at the next level.  To date his defense is light years ahead of his offensive arsenal.  An ultra competitive warrior who makes his living around the rim and cleaning up the glass against 2020’s.  Xavier is a relentless defender, capable of guarding the 1-4 in H.S.  Offensive development will be the key for Samuels, unless a drastic growth spurt occurs, to determine his future collegiate level.  He will need to continue to work on his ball handling, ability to get to the rim off the bounce and shooting touch to ensure he is not your typical “tweener.”  Any acceleration in his perimeter development over the next few summers along with increased basketball IQ from playing and he is a probable money kid.  All the God-given tools are here, it will be nothing more than time and energy in a gym to mold the clay into a scholarship worthy thing of beauty.

Prep Scene: 2018 Player of the Week

A complete list of Pennsylvania’s Rising Seniors to watch will be out in the coming weeks, just in time for the AAU season to kickoff. Who is playing for who? What Spring & Summer events will Pennsylvania’s NEXT crop of stars be at? Prep Scene will be your number 1 source of information in 2017.

After the NCAA’s first live period April 21-23, 2017, don’t be surprised if Junior- Brandon Stone  notches a Power 5 Conference offer to go along with Youngstown State, Mount St. Mary’s, Robert Morris, Duquesne and soon to be others.  If last AAU seasons’ progression is any indication of what’s to come… Look Out.  Last summer, Stone’s performances improved with each passing game/tournament.    From spring to summer you could see his confidence grow as he began to get just how good he could be.  As an underclassman, Stone was once assured to need a year of prep to prepare for the physicality of the college game.  However, an effective weight program and another summer of growth may just change a few minds.  The pride of Southmoreland is a long and lanky sharpshooter with the ability to put the ball on the floor and create his own shot.  Trust me, there is not much space needed to get that shot off either at 6-10.  Stone averaged 26 points per game for coach Muccino, this season while shooting 35% from beyond.

When Neuman-Goretti travels down the street to Southern H.S. on Friday night to take on York Catholic at 6:00 PM, you can expect one thing for certain:  High energy!!!  Whether inserted in the starting line-up or as one of the best 6th men in Pennsylvania, Chris Ings brings it every night.  Ings is an athletic, high-octane 6-1  combo guard with a killer instinct.  His passion for the game is endless.  This kid is a relentless competitor with the flair for the big game heroics.  He can impact a contest at either end of the floor.   Need him to set the table for Kentucky bound Quade Green, he can do that… When Coach Arrigale needs him to score it in bunches he can do that… need a stop, a rebound, take a charge– he gets that as well.  Coaches can’t always describe it… They call it “IT”  Ings has “IT.”  He has a lot of “IT.”   Expect his stock to skyrocket during this 4 game march toward HersheyPark’s Giant Center and over the summer in the Nike EYBL with Jimmy Salmon’s Playaz .

One Freshman invading the Philadelphia area in round 1 will be Harrisburg native Devon “Dink” Lee.  Stop by Lincoln High School, Saturday at 5:00 PM, to get a look at a Prep Scene hidden GEM.  Devon Lee’s Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg) outfit will take on the USA Today #6 ranked team in the country Imhotep Charter.  Lee is an explosive scorer with the quicks to turn the corner, athleticism to score the ball at the rim, and sharpshooting to stretch a defense.  As an Adidas NYBL ALL-STAR last summer Lee established himself as a national talent in his age group.  Saturday is a jump up in weight class-to the “big boy”heavy weight division of Elite High School Basketball.   Our evaluators say the kid is poised to make an impression on the 5th largest media market in the United States.
